About

The ZDD is operated by the core institutes IZI-BB, IZI and IESE. Their institute directors form the directorate and are supported by the core team, which consists of stakeholders from the institutes and an external consultant.

Since August 2013, Professor Antje Baeumner directs the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Chemo- and Biosensorics at the University of Regensburg. Previously, she was Professor and Director of the BEE Graduate School at Cornell University in New York/USA, where she remains an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Engineering and a member of the Research Training Groups for Food Science and Technology and Biomedical Engineering. Prof. Dr. Antje Bäumner has been director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology, Institute Division Bioanalytics and Bioprocesses IZI-BB since September 2023.

Dr. Eva Ehrentreich-Förster works after various postdoctoral positions at the MDC Berlin and the University of Potsdam as an employee of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, since 1998 until June 2014 - at Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering St. Ingbert, Department of Molecular Bioanalytics & Bioelectronics, from July 2014 - at Fraunhofer IZI Bioanalytics & Bioprocesses, Department of Bioanalytics and Biosensorics IZI-BB. She has been head of the working group Biosensor Technology and Microarrays since 2002, became head of Molecular Bioanalytics Department in 2007 and represents the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology, Department of Bioanalytics& Bioprocesses IZI-BB as institute director (acting) since October 2019.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Köhl has been director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI in Leipzig and the Institute for Clinical Immunology at the University Medical Center Leipzig since 2017. The most important stations of her scientific career were the Johan-Wolfgang-Goethe-University Frankfurt (studies), the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Huston/USA (PostDoc), the University Hospital in Frankfurt (Head of the Laboratory for Stem Cell Transplantation and Immunotherapy) and the Hannover Medical School (Director of the Institute for Cell Therapeutics).

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Peter Liggesmeyer is head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE in Kaiserslautern and has held the Chair of Software Engineering: Dependability at the Department of Computer Science at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern since 2004. From 2014 to 2017, he guided the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI e.V.) as its president. He is deputy speaker of the Fraunhofer Strategic Research Area "Intelligent Medicine" as well as of the Fraunhofer Lead Market "Food Industry".

  • The Branch Bioanalytics and Bioprocesses of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI-BB focuses its research on innovations in the fields of food and environmental analysis, diagnostics, drug development and process engineering. The cross-departmental combination of engineering expertise and biomedical and chemical know-how enables the institution to achieve various unique selling points in the fields of sensor technology, biotechnological production processes, automation, and nano- and microsystems technology. The resulting research and development offerings are aimed, among others, at biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies that require both components and integrated solutions along their value chain within their product development.
